You can configure Google Analytics to give you detailed statistics about the products sold on your website - including the number of products sold, the revenue generated, the number of transactions completed, average order value, conversion rate etc.
eCommerce tracking is particularly useful if you use these metrics to drive your marketing initiatives and need to refine them on a frequent basis.
The image to the right is an example of what you'll see in your Google Analytics reports once you have setup e-commerce tracking.

How does a writer track how many books were sold on 49 websites that someone else owns?

Joan, If you don't control/own the websites, it's hard to embed your code for google analytics for ecommerce tracking. That's can be one of the problems of using distribution for selling (if you are using a distributor to sell your books).
If you are selling through a distributor, you can get a 'sense' of sales by creating 'feedback cards' and putting them in your book.
