If you haven’t already, I would encourage everyone to check out Ning.com. Co-founded by Marc Andreessen (of Netscape fame) and Gina Bianchini, Ning (which means “peace” in Chinese) provides a simple and easy-to-use platform for creating your own social network. Probably one of the easiest applications out there, the possibilities are endless when you begin to think about the myriad of different uses for this application. I did a little bit of “tire-kicking” myself and literally had a fully functional social network within minutes. You just go in, name your network and decide whether you would like for it to be public or private. Step 2 allows you to choose features such as music, videos, photos, and/or a blog. In Step 3 you design your network appearance by choosing from a number of templates. You’re also given the option of adding your own CSS. Finally, add your profile questions and you’re ready to launch.
Incidentally, Marc Andreessen’s Blog is on my list of daily “must reads”. Check this post for a more in-depth description of Ning.com.
